Rugby Update

Posted by Joe Kiley at Sep 21, 2020 2:35PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

This announcement covers the recent change in club leadership, and next steps to get a calendar out for hopefully a return to Rugby next spring.

Change in club leadership -
J.R. Lapierre is transitioning to supporting his son with HS Rugby. My name is Joe Kiley and I started helping out Spring of 2019 and will be taking the lead for admin work, and your point of contact for registration, communication, etc. Coaching will be led by Giles Haycock. It’s a testament to how hard and well J.R. has worked to lead the club, as it takes 2 of us to carry on.

Getting a calendar out for next spring –
Unfortunately we were not be able to organize a meaningful fall 2020 season given return to play restrictions during this Covid pandemic. In addition to dealing with the pandemic, USA Rugby has just reorganized and created a new governance structure across the country, which Rugby Colorado is sorting through. We will need to see how both of these will determine when and how we can return to play. As soon as we are able to develop even a preliminary calendar of steps to return to play, we will get that out.

If you have any questions, comments let me know by email or phone.
Joe

2020 SPRING SEASON INFO

Posted by Larimer Knights Rugby Club at Sep 22, 2018 3:52PM PDT

THE SPRING / SUMMER 2020 SEASON IS CANCELLED.
Information on a fall season is pending August 2020.

About Larimer Rugby:

Each age group has its’ own set of rules they play by. Rules are layered as players get older.
Players can be waived up or down based on weight. Ideally, we want 12 players at each age group which gets everyone the best scenario for play time. If we get a lot of players, then we will need more coaches. We won’t make cuts unless we cannot find enough coaches

SPONSORS & DONORS
A great way to lower costs is through sponsorship and donations. If you know of any companies or individuals that may want to sponsor us, please let me know asap.

CODE OF CONDUCT
We will adhere to codes of conducts as to how we interact amongst our team, other players, other coaches, and referees. Rugby Culture!

SAFETY
Rugby is a contact sport and injuries can happen, however, the following rules and methods of play minimize injuries:

  • Wrap tackles only, no shoulder charges
  • Tackles must be below shoulders
  • Cannot tackle someone while they are in the air
  • Pile driving not allowed
  • Tacklers should keep head to the side of the ball carrier when tackling

Larimer Knights Rugby is about

  • SAFETY, FUN, COMPETING, SPORTSMANSHIP

Welcome to Rugby!

Welcome to Rugby!

Athletes all over the world play this game. In fact, rugby is often seen as a “game for life.” Unlike gridiron football, players may continue to participate long after their school athletic career has come to a close.

Players may continue to play rugby for years to come by joining local collegiate and adult clubs. This letter is intended to help you better understand the game of rugby and lay to rest any fear or doubt you may have about your child’s participation.

Rugby features elements of physical contact but is no more intense than other popular sports. In comparison to gridiron football, some experts even consider it a safer game. This logic is justified by several reasons including the fact that rugby allows neither blocking nor rigid protective equipment. This eliminates the incidence of athletes striking each other with hard plastic helmets and shoulder pads or encountering blindside contact. Also, dangerous play is treated as a serious offense and not tolerated by officials. Players may be ordered off the field or even suspended as rugby places equal importance on sportsmanship and winning. Here are some other reasons rugby is appealing:

Possession: Rugby is a game of possession, not yardage. Coaching technique emphasizes passing before being tackled and other skills aimed at retaining possession. This is in place of struggling to gain yards while opponents attempt to stop players at all costs

Evasion: The myth that rugby is less safe because it does not include blocking is simply untrue. As mentioned, players are less likely to fall victim to unexpected defensive hits. In other sports, space is created by brute force. Rugby encourages the use of evasion and misdirection which creates opportunities to run plays and score points. Nearly all collisions can be anticipated, allowing athletes to better prepare for contact situations.

Tackling: Tacklers must wrap their arms around an opponent. Absolutely no tackling is allowed above the shoulders. If it occurs, it is strictly penalized. This not only makes for safer play but for higher success rates in completing tackles. Coaches instruct players on how to tackle as well as how to receive a tackle. Rugby has been the choice of many well-known individuals. President Bill Clinton and Pope John Paul played rugby. Darren Nelson, former Minnesota Viking, played at Stanford. Ted Kennedy played at Harvard, while Boris Karloff founded the Southern California Rugby Football Union. Actors David Niven and Richard Harris played rugby both on and off the screen and even Sean Connery played during his school days. These and many others are all proud members of the rugby community! Finally, rugby players are all unique individuals who are unafraid of taking on a new challenge. This legendary game mixes strength, speed, agility, and welcomes athletes of all shapes and sizes. Be proud that your son or daughter wishes to stand out as a person as well as an athlete. Welcome to your new sport!
